How Physical Therapy Exercises for Tennis Elbow Helps Recovery

Tennis elbow occurs when you suffer a strain to tendons in your forearm. Although it’s called tennis elbow, the majority of people suffering from it don’t play tennis. Tennis elbow can happen to anyone who repeatedly engages in actions that use their hand, wrist, and elbow.

The tendons attached to the bony part of your outside elbow can become inflamed due to repeated movements. Thus, any activity where you need to twist or grip your forearm can cause discomfort.

Physical therapists aim to help patients improve their overall levels of strength in their forearm and wrist. Although each physician may recommend different activities for each patient, the following physical therapy exercises for tennis elbow are beneficial:

Fist Clench

To perform the fist clench, you’ll first need to place a rolled-up towel, sock, or tennis ball in your hand. Then, slowly grip the object in your palm to form a fist and lightly hold for ten seconds. Release and perform up to 10 times.

Benefit: Builds strength in your forearm and wrist muscles.

Wrist Turn

During a wrist turn, you’ll start by bending your elbow at a right angle. Extend your arm out and make sure your palm is facing upwards. Slowly turn your wrist until your palm faces the ground and hold it there for at least 5 seconds. This is one repetition. Repeat this exercise ten times.

Benefit: Encourages range of motion in your wrist and forearm.

Elbow Bend

To perform the elbow bend, you need to begin by standing straight. Lower your arm to one side, and then slowly bend your arm upwards until your hand touches your shoulder. Hold your hand at your shoulder for 15 to 30 seconds and return to the starting point. Repeat this exercise ten times.

Benefit: Improves blood flow to your forearm and wrist.

Wrist Flex

Start with an outstretched arm with your palm facing down. Gently bend your wrist down and use your opposite to push your hand towards your body gently. Hold this stretch for about 15 to 30 seconds. Straighten your wrist and use your opposite hand to pull your fingers back. Hold for 15 to 30 seconds. Do two to three sets with each wrist.

Benefit: Relieve stiffness and improves flexibility.
